Levon was born in 1980 in Yerevan, Armenia. Mr. Mikaelian was brought up in a family of musicians and was introduced to classical as well as jazz music at a very young age. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Khachaturian and many more composers were a big part of his childhood. At the age of 7, he began his professional piano training and was introduced to the music of jazz legends such as Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane, and Bobby McFerrin. Mr. Mikaelian trained in an intensive music school, participated in several piano competitions throughout Armenia, and was awarded a Diploma for the Babajanyan National Competition in 1995. In 1996, he was accepted to the Komitas State Conservatory, majoring in Piano Performance with Dr. Svetlana Dadian. During his years at the conservatory, Mr. Mikaelian performed with many jazz, rock, and pop bands around the city.
In 1999, Mr. Mikaelian moved to the USA with his family. He joined the Maryland Youth Ballet as a pianist in 2000, and was promoted to the position of the Music Director in 2003. Since joining MYB, Mr. Mikaelian accompanied classes for faculty members, as well as guest teachers such as Susan Jaffe. Mr. Mikaelian worked with The Washington Ballet, accompanying classes for Septime Webre, Jeff Eduards, as well as several guest teachers. He also played classes for Kevin McKenzie at the ABT tours at The Kennedy Center, Julie Kent, Roy Kaiser, Merce Cunningham Company, and Trey McIntyre, to name a few. Mr. Mikaelian has also been very involved in jazz, performing in local clubs in Washington, DC. In 2008, he was the lead singer in an album called “With a Song in My Heart” that he released with the group Double Sharp. In 2010 Levon was invited to the USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson Mississippi as a pianist accompanist. Currently, Mr. Mikaelian is the musical director at MYB and is eagerly continuing his innate passion for music.
