Audition

Auditions for the Youth & Pre-Professional Divisions and MYB Extension are accepted on an ongoing basis as space permits.

Ballet audition for classes near Washington DC.

BEGINNER CHECK

Students 8-10 years old with little or no ballet experience, must first request a beginner check. Student will be led through a series of exercises to help faculty determine the child’s suitability for classical ballet training. Turn-out, flexibility, alignment, leg line, foot line, and coordination will be evaluated. 

IN-PERSON AUDITION

Students 8 years and older with previous ballet experience (taking at least 2x per week), must first request an audition.  Prospective students can submit a request to audition in-person in one of our current classes or attend a group audition (when available).

Summer 2024 Group Audition (ages 10-17):

Saturday, January 27 at Baltimore School for the Arts
Check-In 9:00am
Audition Class 9:30-11:00am

Sunday, February 11 at Maryland Youth Ballet
Check-In 12:30pm
Audition Class 1:00-2:30pm

Advanced dancers will be asked to stay an additional 30 minutes to show pointe work.

VIDEO AUDITION

Prospective students unable to audition in-person can submit a video. Audition videos must be submitted by June 15 in order to be considered for the Summer 2023 term.

To create your audition video, please use one of the following sample videos and adhere to the guidelines below:

For students ages 9-14 with at least on year of ballet training and little or no experience dancing on pointe.

For students ages 12 and up with at least three years of ballet training and/or at least one full year of dancing on pointe.

For students ages 14 and up with at least four years of ballet training and/or at least two full years of dancing on pointe.

 

  • Use the sample videos provided above to learn the required material.
  • When recording your own video, play the sample video on another device to provide your music.
  • Begin your video by stating your name, age, and date of birth.
  • Perform one side of each exercise.
  • Do not film into the mirror.
  • The entire dancer should be visible throughout the video (no close-ups).
  • Variations or performance footage is not required.
  • Once your video is complete, upload it as an unlisted video to YouTube, unrestricted file on Google Drive, or easily accessible on another video platform or cloud based service. If you only have a file, email it to pbarnwell@marylandyouthballet.org once you have submitted your application.
  • Results are generally emailed within one week of receiving your application and video.
