Guide for Students and Parents
2006 - 2007

Click Here for a MYB policies for children and parents.

Punctuality

Students are expected to be in complete uniform and ready for class participation at the scheduled class time. Students who are late to class (over 10 minutes late) will be asked to observe; the initial exercises at the beginning of class at all levels are very important and are not to be missed.

Parents are expected to arrange for their children to leave the Maryland Youth Ballet (MYB) after class is finished. If a late pick up is unavoidable, please inform the MYB office at 301-652-2232.

Policy Regarding Inclement Weather

Children’s Classes:When Montgomery County schools are closed for the day due to inclement weather, the MYB will be closed for the day. If County schools open one hour or two hours late, classes will be held as scheduled. If County schools close early, MYB classes in the afternoon will be canceled. Cancellation of after school activities, evening activities, or Saturday activities by the Montgomery County schools does not necessarily imply that MYB classes will be canceled. Please call 301-652-2232 for information regarding cancellation due to weather in these cases and for Saturday classes.

Adult Classes: Please call the MYB at 301-652-2232 for information on our voice mail. We make every effort to hold adult classes whenever public transportation is operating.

Observing Classes Parents may observe class once or twice a year with the permission of the instructor and advance arrangement. Parents may not habitually watch class from an open doorway. There will be a formal demonstration of each level at the end of the term. (Creative Movement classes have “visiting days” four times during the year.) The Introductory Division classes that meet one time per week have demonstrations at the MYB studios. The Junior and Advanced Division classes will have a Performance Demonstration on Sunday, June 10, at a nearby local high school at 2 PM with a mandatory rehearsal the previous day, Saturday, June 9.

The Maryland Youth Ballet Company The Maryland Youth Ballet is our amateur performing company. It is made up of the more serious students, many of whom plan to have a career in dance. Ballet students at the Preparation for Pointe level and up are eligible for “The Nutcracker.” The spring production generally uses dancers at higher levels. Some younger students may be asked to perform with the company when a particular piece of choreography requires younger children. Dancers who are part of our scholarship program are expected to perform with the company whenever asked to do so. There will be two productions this term: our seventeenth annual “Nutcracker” December 22-23, 26-30, and our annual spring production May 12, 13, 2007.

A Few Reminders:

  • Check the various bulletin boards in and around the lobby. They contain important and interesting information about rehearsals, alums, auditions, events, etc.
  • Students should remember to dress in appropriate street attire when arriving at and leaving the studio.
  • Students and their families are asked not to eat or drink or smoke on the premises.
  • Very small children and babies should not be brought to the studio for any great length of time. Please do not deposit soiled diapers in our wastebaskets.
  • The MYB phone is not a public telephone. Please pay 35 cents for each call you need to make.
  • Please do not litter in dressing room areas.
  • Check the dressing room for your belongings before leaving. Articles left in dressing rooms disappear quickly. Your name in your dance shoes and dance attire is ESSENTIAL!

Midyear progress reports will be sent home for the Junior and Advanced Divisions. However, please do not hesitate to contact any instructor about problems or questions you may have.

Please Note:

Instructors at the Maryland Youth Ballet are anxious to talk to parents about any problem or question. However, please respect their time. Please do not call instructors directly at their homes. To contact any particular instructor, please leave a message at the studio with your name, number, and the best times to reach you. You will be contacted as soon as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
