MYB’s Outreach Initiative, JumpStart, was established in 2007 to help increase the diversity in classical ballet as well as give disadvantaged children in our community access to formal ballet training. MYB offers free after school classes in several local elementary schools as well as intensive dance training at our state-of-the-art studios. The goals of the program are first, to expose children in the community to a classic artistic discipline and second, to find and nurture talent that lacks financial resources.
The overall benefits of our ballet training environment include developing the physical and mental discipline and sense of self-worth that is so important to young children. Dance education can also help to develop the critical thinking necessary to move step-by-step towards a goal which is an invaluable life skill that will help children be successful, regardless of their career path.
The JumpStart Outreach Initiative has three main components:
Ballet classes are offered weekly, after-school at local elementary schools. Interested students enroll free for a semester, are taught by MYB faculty and are provided with a leotard, tights, and ballet shoes.
Approximately twenty JumpStart students are selected to attend our free, week long, all-day summer dance intensive at MYB. The children take classes in ballet technique, ballet vocabulary, stretch, and jazz, with dance related activities. On the final day, families and friends are invited for a formal in-studio performance by the students.
Full, School-Year Scholarship
Through the outreach classes and summer intensive, MYB faculty identifies a few gifted children who demonstrate potential for a career in dance. These students are then offered a full scholarship to train at MYB for the school year.
